I'm reading my 4th book on the gold standard.  This one is the best so far, and I wish I had started with this one.  In fact, I'd argue that this book is the most thorough of them all and it stands alone in answering most of the questions about the gold standard.  I'm almost done with it and have three more to go before I'll consider myself worthy of sharing an opinion on the subject.

What I can share now is this: there are multiple "gold standards," and they all have their pros and cons.  For anyone thinking this is easy, they haven't done their homework.

This one is Economics of a Pure Gold Standard by Professor Mark Skousen, from 2010. 170 pages.

Speaking of gold, I posted my 5th Precious Metals video today.  Just an update on the Silver to Gold ratio, plus some other topics that I wanted to share.

Today's Market Watch screenshot.  Good to see the tapering is actually happening.  "Just" $65b this month.

Cincinnati's Hammer and Sickle

We ventured over to the West side of Cincinnati today to grab some video of the billboard that has been there for months.  It says "Workplace Freedom Act" and sports two very large hammer and sickles.




The "Workplace Freedom Act" billboard is along side the 75 Freeway facing Southbound traffic.  This billboard exists alongside other Ohio freeways in Columbus (the state capitol) and Cleveland.

Ohio legislation - Workplace Freedom Act - will convert Ohio into a right to work state.  It is similar legislation that put Wisconsin on the map and triggered the Scott Walker repeal attempt.  The main threat to unions is that they can force people to join their union or pay union dues.

There are two things that are odd about this billboard:

1) America has come a long way to where the symbol of communism, an ideology responsible for 100 million deaths in the last century, can exist on billboards in relatively large cities and no controversy exists.  Some will say this is a good thing, others will take the opposite position.

2) And who is behind this billboard?  Are the right to work advocates using the hammer and sickle to show their opponents' true intentions?  That would be quite accurate!  Oddly, it is the unions behind these billboards.  Don't ask us why.

UPDATED 1pm:

I found a video where the silver investor says the average ratio in the past 23 years has been 66:1.  Be sure to investigate the real ratio and its history before you buy!   

UPDATED 1.28 10:30am:

YouTuber TheMicMac88 has done some ratio videos and I've communicated with him via YouTube.  I asked him if he could validate my suggestion to trade on ratio targets.  In his latest video he has corrected the information that I used in the video above where I said the average ratio is 50:1.  He confirms that is true over the past 100 years, but that the past 24 years it has averaged 66:1.  He argues that silver has been losing value to gold over time, and ratio trades should only occur at extremes such as 90:1 or 40:1, and that one should always hold onto some gold.  Good advice on better data than I had just a week ago.
