Book Review: The New Case for Gold

Book Review: The New Case for Gold, by Jim Rickards.  192 pages, April 2016.

James Rickards is my go-to-guy for the unique mix and insight into current and predicted international relations, national security and monetary policy.  Few can speak to these areas with the knowledge he does, and fewer still have a track record of reading and forecasting events more accurately.
P127:  “All of these countries are working behind the scenes to end the dollar hegemony while the United States seems to be asleep at the switch.  Investors will wake up one day and find that the dollar is in free fall and they won’t know why.  Still, you can already see this big switch coming.  If the dollar collapses from a lack of confidence, the entire international monetary system collapses too.  That is what I expect.”
He just published his third book, The New Case for Gold.  I enjoyed reading it and I learned quite a lot.  I recommend this book to those interested in precious metals investing and those interested in understanding the dynamics of the international monetary system.  I have added this book to the Ushanka library at the left.  Mr. Rickards joins Ayn Rand and Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn as authors with more than one book in the Ushanka Library.
P18:  “Our goal is not to rehearse the same old arguments, but rather to put the gold discussion in a twenty-first-century context.”
I saw three main themes in the book: inflation, monetary collapse, and the dwindling supply of physical gold.  He explains, in detail, how he anticipates these three factors to merge into a perfect storm for gold.

A relatively small book at 192 pages, you’ll find it is quite condensed with new and valuable information.  I marked nearly every page with notes.  And I felt many paragraphs read as summaries, and could easily have been introduction paragraphs for more chapters on related subjects.  One benefit I had going into The New Case for Gold was I had read the author’s previous two books, Currency Wars and Death of Money, so I understood many of the concepts that he did not use a lot of space to explain in this book.

The New Case for Gold offers a comprehensive discussion on the manipulation of the gold price.  It is far better than I’ve seen anywhere else.  I think the author explains it well, but I still hesitate to embrace the idea that the price can be kept down, artificially, year after year.  The March news that Canada had sold all 1.7 tons of their gold was too late for this book, but it is an example of how the price of gold stays low.  There are sellers out there too - something you won’t read about in this book.

The author makes a convincing case of price spikes in the near (2-10yr) future driven by an international monetary collapse, or the collapse of the dollar.  But then he tells the reader to only allocate 10% of his savings into gold.  That allotment is down from his suggestion in his previous book.  While conservative and in line with many financial advisors, this advice does not make sense in the current economic climate.  The stock market is inflated by as much as 50%.  Bonds are losing appeal as defaults are more likely and rating agencies’ rankings are now suspect.  You can’t earn a penny with a savings account.  And the supply of physical gold is in question while the price is 40% below its 2011 balance.  In this environment, and while reading this book, I was (and still am) considering a far larger allotment.  The fact that Rickards says only 10% makes me question if there are some other monetary solutions that restore confidence yet do not translate into higher values for gold.

You’ll also read about current monetary schemes in The New Case for Gold such as the war on cash, bail ins, replacing 401k funds with IOUs, and negative interest rates.  My understatement of the year: It is better to learn about these now.

Thug Notes Review: The Fountainhead

Ayn Rand's 1943 book, The Fountainhead, is my second favorite book.  My first: Atlas Shrugged.

Two of the most incredible stories.

Thug Notes just posted his review of The Fountainhead.  Good, but I don't think he does the book justice.  Still, a nice review of the story.

Cruz Colorado Wrapup

Trump:  "It is a rigged system."

Story at Daily Mail:

FB Comrade Remy suggests a statement from Ted Cruz:
"If you're fed up with the corruption of Washington, you should vote for me. Provided I don't get your state's election canceled so I can just buy the nomination through corrupt back room dealing."

Bitter Cruzinger and Colorado alternate delegate, Robert Zubrin, insists that all Colorado delegates be forbidden to vote for Trump "because Trump has publicly stated that his methods of operation include buying or renting the services of politicians for cash."

Robert's moral outrage is as epic, as it is phony.

Fellow Bitter Cruzinger, Rush Limbaugh, explains to the masses "It's no secret that Colorado was gonna have a convention and they're gonna choose their delegates before the primary."

So the disenfranchisement in Colorado is ok then, says Rush.  Good luck convincing Trump supporters of that, Rush.

By now you've seen the video of Colorado Delegate Larry Lindsey burning his Republican National Committee membershipDouglas County removed Larry because he voted for Trump.

Comrade Don Surber
Now, a very special message from Reince Priebus to all the Republicans who worked so hard over the years to help Republicans win back the West Virginia Legislature after 82 years.

But under the no obscenity rule, I cannot post it. Let's just say the second word in the two-word message is "you."

I'm all for rules. Maybe that brilliant lawyer, Cruz, just taught Trump. . . and Trump's delegates . . . and Trump's supporters. . . an important legal lesson.  Perhaps.  But he may have also reminded us why the lawyers are often the first to hang.

I'm not sure this gloating is going to attract Trump voters to Cruz.  And if he can't do that, he has no chance at winning the nomination keeping Trump from winning the nomination.

Is there a used-car dealership in Texas missing their salesman?

Whether he is lying, or "fudging."  Whether he is cheating, or just "being clever."  Ted Cruz is reinforcing the image of that petty, dishonest, whiny little bitch on the school playground begging to have his ass kicked.

I say, "beg, and you shall receive."

UPDATED 4:30pm:

RightScoop says the Larry Lindsey story isn't complete.  Larry apparently didn't submit the proper paperwork to be a Colorado delegate.  His outrage is genuine, but his story apparently is not.

UPDATED 4.13.16 9am:

A protest has been scheduled at the GOP HQ there in Greenwood Village for April 15th.  Website.

My predictions:
1) The GOP and Bitter Cruzingers will dismiss this protest as 'nothing to see here,' and
2) They will avoid answering questions such as, "When was the last time Republican voters organized a protest at GOP HQ?" or "Will you allow Republicans to vote in November and in future elections?"
UPDATED 4.13.16 10:30pm:

Gutfeld is right, but the verdict is already in.  Cruz and GOP are guilty, and Trump is the victim.

UPDATED 4.14.16 9am:

Ann Coulter's response, at Breitbart:
Apparently, what people mean by THE RULES is that there is no RNC rule specifically prohibiting a state party from giving all the delegates to a single nominee, even if that is demonstrably at odds with the will of the voters.

The state parties are given a lot of discretion, so Cruz harasses and cajoles the local party until it awards all the state’s delegates to him. Trump keeps winning elections, and Cruz keeps winning sneaky procedural victories.

It’s as if Cruz and Trump are playing different sports: Trump keeps belting home runs, while Cruz is berating the umpire until he calls a balk, then prances to home base, telling everyone he hit a grand slam.

Charlie LeDuff Asks. . .

"What has the Republican Party done for you?"

A question I suspect we'll be hearing more as the GOPe, and Cruz specifically, continue their effort to steal delegates from Trump.

New Rickards Book: The Case for Gold

I started reading his new book, The Case for Gold, this morning.  I'm on Chapter 3 already.

You will read about:
Our existing informal gold standard,
Marx's influence on value,
The Theft of Inflation,
And the five risks we face in the digital age.
In other words, this is not just a book about the yellow metal.  It is about our current and coming economic challenges.

This is my 8th or 9th book on Gold and Monetary Policy, and my third Rickards book.  I'll be sharing more on what I've learned sometime in the near future.

The author, Jim Rickards, was interviewed today by Greg Hunter.  An excellent interview.  (Don't be spooked by the $10k/oz title.  That usually means a doomsdayer-type or someone who is selling gold, like Peter Schiff.  In this case, Mr. Rickards is discussing the math behind a future gold standard.)

WIsconsin

Senator Cruz won the Wisconsin primary last night.  I waited to hear from Comrade Matt Forney before posting here.  Matt has been on the ground in Wisconsin, and he has become my go-to-comrade for insight into this crazy primary season.  He did not disapoint.

He posted his after-action report at Return of Kings: Donald Trump’s Loss In Wisconsin Sets The Stage For Carnage In The Republican Convention.

Did you know:
Trump performs best in states with large numbers of minorities, which is why he’s swept the South, Northeast and industrial Midwest as well as the Latino-heavy Western states of Nevada and Arizona. Cruz performs best in predominately white states like Iowa, Kansas and Utah that have been somewhat spared the horrors of globalization and multiculturalism, both of which Trump attacks in his speeches.
I've been toying with a "Cruz Train" idea for a while now.  Matt gave me the missing pieces:
