Naked liberalism makes even liberals uncomfortable. It's why they get uncomfortable hearing the self-righteous voices on NPR. It's too much like looking into a mirror and the things in the mirror are surprisingly unsettling. Hearing a Keith Olbermann or Jon Stewart tear into Republicans was one thing. Opposition is always safe ground. It's when the talk begins to turn to what you stand for that things begin to fall apart.
Newsweek and MSNBC had made the mistake of going "Full Liberal" and not only is there a much smaller liberal audience, but that audience doesn't really like naked liberalism. It would rather see its agenda dressed up in mainstream colors than see it for what it really is.

We just finished a book written by a friend we met through blogging. We met Diann Russell through I Own The World, and she is now a blogger at All the Right Snark.
Russell has published three books this month at Smashwords,
where you can download the e-books in whatever e-reader format you
wish. We just finished one of her two fiction books, Sliding Home Feet
First.
The
author classifies it as a ‘coming of age’ story. Our better half calls it a
“life” book. The book summary calls it, “a story of an American
family.” We’d say it is 'all of the above.'
Our Review:
Sliding
Home Feet First is about family, life’s successes and failures,
friendships - both true and otherwise, and character. You’ll go through
a couple chapters of character development. After that, you’re in for a
wild ride as the pages turn on their own.
You’ll
experience all that high school drama that, thankfully for us, is long
forgotten. You’ll watch as the main character makes judgement errors
that later blow up in his face. His faith in the goodness of others
becomes a stubborn attribute that leads to pain at times, but at other
times becomes the core success factor.
You’ll
follow Russell’s main character through more drama than, hopefully, you
experienced in the latter years of high school and early years of
college. Not only do you experience those first girlfriend
relationships, but the college roommates and the Woodstock-type
acquaintances.
Russell’s
fiction is believable, from the character reactions to shocks along the
way to the angst of being a Cubs fan. From the quirky personalities of
the grandmother and father to those of the siblings. You’ll believe
you are there as you read the conversations and watch the arguments.
This
book is a fun-read for someone long past high school, but we’d suggest
it’d be a powerful influence for high school juniors and seniors too.
Between the lines there is plenty of relationship and family advice for
the reader. Why not learn from someone else’s experiences?
We
struggled with the slow start, but it was well worth it. We’d like to
see this made available at Amazon for easier Kindle setup. Otherwise, a
wonderful book. You will be shocked it is one of Diann Russell’s
first.

Sliding Home Feet First takes place in the Chicago area in the 1960s.
You captured the Irish community, the Cubs-fan angst, and the racial
challenges of that time and place. Did you grow up in Chicago, or was
Sliding Home Feet First a research project?
I
grew up in Central NY in a German/Scottish Presbyterian family, and I
am a Braves fan. That being said: I did live in Chicago for quite a
number of years after college. I directed "Hair" in 1994 for a company
outside of Chicago, and since I was having the play (to use the term
loosely) take place in Chicago, I did a lot of research on "Chicago in
the sixties. " Plus I had an older friend who was out to dinner for her
21st birthday and got caught inadvertently in the riots during the
convention (she got arrested). I was intrigued by the time period (and I
love the music!).
2.
You are a political blogger who posts rants from a conservative view
almost daily, yet there was little in the way of political commentary in
this book. How do you maintain this separation in your writing? Are
there two sides of Diann Russell, a political activist side and a drama
side? Are there more sides that will someday be represented in print?
It's
a left brain/right brain thing, I think. My daily column is a leftie
(which is kind of ironic when you stop and think about it). My novels
come from the right side. I remember once in music theory class saying
that music is an enigma because it is both mathematical and creative --
geometric and fluid. My theory teacher gave me a look of horror. I
think I'm right on that one and I'll go to the mat on it. My brain
works the same way. Storytelling comes from a different place.

You dropped three books onto the market in as many days. Obviously
you can write multiple themes in parallel. What should we expect from
you in the near future?
I
am a very "character-driven" storyteller. To me, the characters are
what motivates -- families, relationships, conflicts. So don't expect a
murder mystery or a espionage thriller. Ain't gonna happen. I am
working on final rewrites of a novel called "Pieces of Dad." Like
"Sliding Home" and "Under the Cloud," it takes place in the past (1960s
through early 90s).

I was already tearing up before that story about Jared’s truck. But as the details piled up — the truck was a Dodge 4X4 Ram 1500 with decals on it that included the 10th Mountain Division, the 82nd Airborne Division, an American flag, and a Go Army sticker — I lost it.
And there I was sitting in my car in a Walmart parking lot on a sunny Memorial Day in my hometown crying hard. Crying like a child. Crying as if I’d lost my child.
The English Defence League (EDL) is a far-right street protest movement which opposes what it considers to be a spread of Islamism, Sharia law and Islamic extremism in the United Kingdom. At many of their demonstrations, EDL members have clashed with counter-demonstrators, including supporters of Unite Against Fascism (UAF).
EDL co-founder, Tommy Robinson, said yesterday:
We are at war!
What are your thoughts about watching a passionate, politically-incorrect speech on a street in a Western country? Is this disturbing to you? Do you call this 'hate speech?'
If you had only these two options, which would you choose:
1) Random beheadings on your neighborhood streets in the name of Islam, or
2) Street speeches denouncing the "poor armed muslims" and anger about soldiers butchered in the streets?
You probably would want a third choice, right? We do!
But, if you were the victim from last week's beheading, wouldn't you want someone to be as angry as Tommy Robinson? We would!
We don't know the full scope of EDL. Many seem to want to paint them as fascist or racist. Maybe. Did you know Tommy Robinson's group has sub-groups for Jews, gays, and women?

One thing we do have to point out:
It is not honorable to shout out at individual Muslim women or attack individual Muslims. Because at the same time, there are individual Muslims serving the British armed forces.
We have to identify, and separate, Muslims from Islam.
When Hitler inflamed passions with angry speeches, he spoke to the very legitimate issue of the day regarding the terms of surrender forced on Germany after World War One. The Treaty of Versailles forced Germany to pay for damages at a level that could not be met. Many historians credit the Allies' terms of surrender in WWI to guarantee the start of WWII. The resulting mass inflation combined with national shame lifted Hitler to power. But pulling out of the Treaty and restoring Germany as an economic powerhouse was a means to a very different and ugly end.
If Tommy Robinson succeeds at leading a new political party in Britain that restores peace from radical Islam by peaceable (albeit unpopular) means, then there is only good to come of this movement. Right?
As any Ushanka reader knows, our senses are sensitive to key words like "Socialism," "Tyranny," or "Communism." We use these words and study their history. We watch how others use them too.
The most prevelent use of these terms was during the 2008 election in political cartoons. We have never seen these concepts used in such quantities before or since. You can see this phenomenon in any of these three places here at Ushanka:
Since the 2008 election we have found the use of these key words mostly in articles and blog posts where the writer is arguing that President Obama is not a Communist or Socialist or Fascist or Tyrant. We track these incidents as well under the Ushanka label:
Our fascination with this language, and our blog header with a Hammer and Sickle are two reasons we are often spurned by the more mainstream conservative blogs. It is easy to label us as extreme, or fringe, when the theme or our new media site is based on the ideology that killed over 100,000,000 people last century. But to do so means one hasn't reviewed our work.
Other reasons to ignore us could be 1) some are limited to what they can say due to advertisers or owners, 2) intimidation with the depth of our research into the leftist mind (See the Library and Cinema sections to the left, read our book notes), 3) Envy - not wanting to trigger any Commie Obama hat sales (envy it isn't just a 'left' thing), 4) disagreement with our philosophy that, if liberalism continues unchecked, we'll reach a level of tyranny equal to that of the 20th century where human life is subordinate to the needs of the people, or 5) our no-holds-barred mockery of Libertarians.
Curious, we checked our email account to get a count of how many times we've written to one of the key conservative bloggers. Would you believe we've sent him links to Ushanka posts, that fit his site's narrative, 45 times without one link back or the courtesy of a single reply? Ah, to be the king....
While the lack of community among some like-minded conservatives can be frustrating, this also highlights the generosity and openness of those patriots who do communicate, partner and share. We've updated our blogroll to show 1) who writes back (Comrades), 2) who wears our cool hat, and 3) who we've met in person.
Anyhoo... as Zoomie would say... the driver for this post are two recent blog posts that use the words-we-do-not-speak-of language.
First, Comrade and hat owner Captain Capitalism wrote a post two days ago titled, Yes Jimmy, the Democrats are Socialists, where he shares his frustration with the common argument that emerges from such a statement:
So when you make any accusation of a politician or person being a socialist you are immediately dismissed as crazy or a right wing lunatic because you're essentially claiming that person is a fool-near-murderer.

The foundation of the Soviet model of trade and investment was centralization under the guise of "universal public ownership". The entire goal of communism in general was not to give more social and political power to the people, but to extinguish alternative options and focus power into the hands of a select few. The process used to reach this end result can vary, but the goal always remains the same. In most cases, such centralization begins with economic hegemony, and it is in our fiscal structure that we have the means to see the future. Sovietization in our financial life will inevitably lead to sovietization in our political life.
Does the U.S. economy’s path resemble the Soviet template exactly? No. And I’m sure the very suggestion will make the average unaware free market evangelical froth at the mouth. However, as I plan to show, the parallels in our fundamentals are disturbing; the reality is that true free markets in America died a long time ago.
No doubt, there is plenty of 'gray area' along the political spectrum between freedom and tyranny.
For every argument we could give that Obama is a Communist, a sane and reasonable person could give a compelling counter argument based in reality and fact. In other words, it is not an absolute.
So, as we've suggested here in the past, one only has to know the following: in which direction within that political spectrum are we moving?
Think about that while you wait in line for your doctor nurse practitioner next year.
Our story about two IRS audits during the summer of 2010 - the same period the Cincinnati IRS office was harassing conservative groups seeking tax deferment status. They were harassed, as were the Romney donors who faced politicized audits in 2012.
While we think our audits were triggered by legitimate reasons, the current news about a run-amok IRS suggests the penalties we faced were political.
We suspect the IRS staffer who chose to pursue penalties did not like the soviet-style Commie Obama ushanka hats that we've been selling since 2008.
This past Tuesday we had the honor to join the Tea Party organization in Cincinnati on their march to the Federal Building to protest the IRS. Here is our video from that march:
Author Bruce Bower predicted in 2007 that Europe was over as a developed, Western civilization.
Bower is gay, and frequently vacationed in Europe. He saw the changes with each trip which motivated his 2007 book, While Europe Slept. It is a short book and an easy read, and explains everything we are seeing today, from butchered UK soldiers to burning cars in France and Sweden.

He suggested that European countries would, at some point, stop the uber-tolerance BS of opening the doors to masses of people who have zero intention of assimilating into the European/Western culture.
He predicted that, at some point, Europe will swing to the absolute opposite position with tight immigration laws and even mass deportations. That seemed a possibility back in 2007 when we read his book. Further, we shared our book with a gay friend who was also a frequent traveler in Europe and he agreed that Europeans can be quick to take 180-degree positions as radical as Bower suggests.

It took 20 minutes for the police to respond to that crime. But last night UK police were in force to counter any anti-Muslim sentiment that may arise. Would you agree that their standards have shifted since the Thatcher days?

We didn't always live bug-free.
We once rented an apartment in Garden Grove, CA (called by the locals: Garbage Grove). We shared it with a guy in a wheel chair who'd go around and tell people he was a Vietnam Vet, when in fact he got high one day and surfed next to into a pier.
We remember vividly the swarms of cockroaches that would come from, and retreat into, the kitchen counter under the sink. Our veteran loser roommate didn't care, but we did. We didn't hem and haw, wring our hands or attempt to negotiate with the intruders. Nor did we pick and choose which cockroaches could stay and give the rest a California-mandated 60-days notice.
Instead, we deployed weapons of mass destruction and took back our apartment. We probably took a couple years off of our life and risked our future offspring to unsightly birth defects, but we never once felt regret.

...it was a movie of inspiration - both of the man and might of Andrew Breitbart and of the new media usurpation of the stonewalling and bad reporting we've come to expect from major commercial media outlets.
With one event Andrew Breitbart utilized social media via James O'Keefe's expose videos to sufficiently expose the moral filth and corruption of publicly funded 'community group', Acorn, that the Senate took measures to defund the group before any written article had been generated by the New York Times or the Washington Post!
This was Breitbart's notice to media that his indignation would not relent despite the full out attempts to lie to diminish and suppress the truth from being provided to the public.
Time and time again we see a cast of characters from media goons, propaganda manipulators, and political apologists doing their best to look the other way and ignore reality and the harm and pain of what was actually going on.
Breitbart stood out and engaged a discourse about truth in a highly hostile arena of powerful media and willing tools and puppets.
When confronting one such situation, he went to the extent of offering an increasing reward lasting over a week until reaching $100,000 to any single person who provided video proof.
The unclaimed reward was but for only *one example* of the purported trumped up lie that a black Congressman was assailed with the racial provocative slur of N-ote by 15 people 15 times by Tea Party members peacefully assembled protesting a bill.
Only later did Breitbart collect and publish a full video collage of cell phone caps and handy cam footage showing with audio the entire public march chosen path directly though the protest without any such event occurring. The ruse was a bust and exposed. If not for Breitbart it wouldn’t have ended so conclusively.
Andrew Breitbart died in 2012 with a legacy of much love from his wife, children, and other family and friends ...his spirit lives in the desires of every citizen journalist to report and expose truth when no one else does or is too timid to risk revealing the difficult story in front of their eyes and cell phone.
This is a great book. The author does a great job at explaining the situation in 1770 and later years. He frames the Bunker Hill Battle with the Lexington-Concord battle, and the subsequent Boston Siege. You will get to know the people involved, how they felt about their commanders and King George III and about fighting. You'll learn about all the mistakes on both sides, and will likely be surprised at all the in-fighting within the Patriot ranks.
Our focus of study here at Ushanka is on tyranny, and specifically Communism. But it is nice every now and then to read about the other side - the good side.
We enjoyed a Rocky Patel Sun Grown, our favorite, while we read Bunker Hill: A City, a Siege, a Revolution, by Nathaniel Philbrook. This book just came out last month, and it is hard to put down.

Washington Examiner: The top photo is Sarah Hall Ingram. She makes $177k a year at the IRS, and has received over $103k in bonuses since running the group that denied the Tea Party their tax-exempt requests.
The Tea Party groups all wanted smaller government. A smaller government would not pay an IRS staffer $177k, nor an average of $20k in bonuses each year.
One could argue that Commissar Sarah Hall Ingram was looking out for ol #1 at the IRS.
One could argue she still is.
One could even go so far as to say if one heart bypass surgery is left and it comes down to Commissar Sarah Hall Ingram or a younger, more vibrant and attractive gal like Sarah Palin, the Commissar will get a new lease on life. Is it possible - follow me on this - that there could be one or more other government employees who have, or will, place their personal gain over their nation's best interests?

Making matters worse is they don’t need the cheesy microphones anymore and the reel-to-reel tape reorders. We’re all wired and bugged everywhere we go automatically through our high-tech toys. So we have come to depend on the moderation and judiciousness of our government.
What we have now discovered about Barack Obama and Eric Holder’s America, if we didn’t already know it, is that any belief in a benign and decent government in this country is absolute horseshit. Liberalism has been revealed as a fascist joke.

REMEMBER, the IRS is the only government agency that can seize property. They are best positioned to harass citizens.
The news on Friday that had everybody but us excited was that the IRS was targeting conservative groups - mainly the Tea Party groups - with audits and tax-exempt reviews. Rather than use objective systems to flag possible returns with fraudulent math, the bureaucrats in the IRS chose the tax payers to pursue based on political ideology. As we mentioned earlier today, this is not new for Democrats.
REMEMBER, LiberalsProgressives Communists 1) lie, 2) cheat, 3) steal, 4) agitate, and 5) tolerate others who do too. This is numbers 4 and 5. (The fact that a tax return was submitted means number 3 has already been accomplished.)
At various points over the past two years, Internal Revenue Service officials targeted nonprofit groups that criticized the government and sought to educate Americans about the U.S. Constitution, according to documents in an audit conducted by the agency’s inspector general.
The Internal Revenue Service's scrutiny of conservative groups went beyond those with "tea party" or "patriot" in their names—as the agency admitted Friday—to also include ones worried about government spending, debt or taxes, and even ones that lobbied to "make America a better place to live," according to new details of a government probe.
The investigation also revealed that a high-ranking IRS official knew as early as mid-2011 that conservative groups were being inappropriately targeted—nearly a year before then-IRS Commissioner Douglas Shulman told a congressional committee the agency wasn't targeting conservative groups.
On Monday, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) fired back on assertions by the IRS that its efforts to target conservative groups were relegated to low-level employees. “Of course not,” he told Breitbart News.
Lois G. Lerner, who heads the IRS division that oversees tax-exempt organizations, said the practice was initiated by low-level workers in Cincinnati and was not motivated by political bias.
By June 2011, the [Cincinnati IRS] unit had flagged over 100 Tea Party-related applications and the criteria used to scrutinize organizations had grown considerably, flagging not just “Tea Party” or “Patriot” in group names, but also groups that were working on issues like “government debt,” “taxes” and even organizations making statements that “criticize how the country is being run.”
The Washington Times reports that the idiot, and former Speaker, Nancy Pelosi claims the Citizens United case caused IRS staff to searches on "tea party" and "patriot" words to find organizations to harass. In other words, in her tiny little mind, it is the Supreme Court's fault that the IRS targeted certain groups for harassment.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said Monday that the IRS should be condemned for targeting conservative groups for special scrutiny in the run-up to last year’s elections, but she also blamed the Supreme Court for opening the door to broader political activity.
Tea party groups on Monday are threatening to sue the Internal Revenue Service after the agency admitted last week that it wrongly targeted conservative groups applying for nonprofit status.
REMEMBER when people, and heads of organizations, took responsibility for errors or lapses in judgement? It shouldn't take a lawsuit.
In a world long gone, the IRS would offer to cover ALL tax-related expenses for the groups who were unfairly harassed. That is what we call "the right way" to respond to this story.

His bigger fears lie in the IRS administration of Obamacare where he is concerned that "No stent for you," will be heard when the powers that be know what groups you support, what thoughts you have, and what area you live in.

Congresswoman Michelle Bachman nailed it today when she said the big news this past weekend of the IRS targeting conservatives with expensive and burdensome audits is meant to distract from the Benghazi scandal. Speaking to WND:
“I was in that Benghazi hearing,” she told WND. “I think the Obama administration is desperate to spin Benghazi, and they can’t. I think they saved this story up for a day like today so that conservatives would focus on this admission.”
It won’t work, she insisted.
